Please Speak Continuously and Describe Your Experiences as They Come to You (Brandon Cronenberg, 2019)

We Like Short Shorts

I was disappointed to find out that this was, in fact, a test run for a movie as I was ready to use Please Speak Continuously… as a great example of why some stories work much better as short films than as full-length features.

Oh, well…

In less than 10 minutes, Brandon Cronenberg creates a stimulating kaleidoscope with one brilliant visual idea after another. Please Speak Continuously… tells a story about dreams within dreams within dreams that recalls Satoshi Kon’s Paprika and will please fans of Nolan’s Inception, thanks to a killer ambiguous ending.

The always amazing Deragh Campbell portrays her character with deadpan precision in a nightmarish short film that’s not without its absurd humour. “Eventually I realize I’m in a kind of hell,” she says about her never-ending bad dreams, “because it seems impossible that the wig industry could manufacture enough units to cover everyone.”

Please Speak Continuously… is an exhilarating ride that succeeds because it’s brief and goes straight to the point. Even though I’m not entirely sure this could be as great as a feature, Possessor has now become one of my most anticipated movies of 2019/20.
